Quick Explanation of a US Green Card
The USA Green Card is an Immigrant Visa which legally entitles the holder to work and live permanently in the USA. There is NO time restriction as long as the holder is permanently resident in the USA.
Allows the holder to legally work, buy a house, run a business, have investments, travel, obtain credit, get a driving license etc. in the USA. There is absolutely no restriction on where to live or what job to do.
Has a similar form/size to a typical credit card. Example is below.
When considering to immigrate to the USA, it's not always possible to obtain a green card at the outset depending on the immigrant visa category being applied for. A few immigrant visa categories do have some limitations (e.g. what company you may work for if applying for an inter-company transfer visa). Usually these other immigrant visas can be converted to a green card after a period of time in teh USA.
A holder has the same rights and benefits as a USA Citizen except they cannot vote, sit on a jury, apply for certain government jobs (until they become a citizen through Naturalization) or run for President. The Green Card holder keeps their present citizenship but may apply for USA Citizenship (called Naturalization) after 5 years (3 years if married to a USA Citizen) of continuous residence in the USA. This is of course optional and some immigrants never even apply for USA citizenship.
